Petra Kvitova called Rafael Nadal a true inspiration after the Spaniard pulled off a historic comeback to win the Australian Open. Nadal appeared to be done in the Australian Open but he recovered from two sets down to beat Daniil Medvedev 2-6 6-7 (5) 6-4 6-4 7-5.

Nadal was down by two sets and facing three consecutive break points in the sixth game of the third set. Nadal saved those three consecutive break points and won the three sets in a row to pull off a stunning comeback. Nadal now owns a record 21 Grand Slams.

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer didn’t play in Melbourne and they remain at 20 Grand Slams each. « Rafa, your spirit and fight has no limit. You are a true inspiration to us all. Thank you for teaching us what it means to never give up.

Nadal on his win

Nadal has had many great battles and victories throughout his career. “It was one of the most emotional matches of my career,” Nadal said during the trophy ceremony.

“To share the court with Daniil was just an honour. It is amazing. To be honest, one and a half months ago I wasn’t sure if was able to be back on the Tour playing tennis again. But today I am here in front of all of you with this trophy in front of me.

You are just amazing, thank you so much”. The crowd clearly wanted Nadal to win as the majority of the crowd rooted for Nadal. Medvedev was unhappy with the crowd many times during the match. Nadal thanked the crowd for their great support after winning the title.

“Having the huge support I received over the past three weeks is going to stay in my heart for the rest of my life, so thank you very much,” Nadal added.
