The Equalizer TV Show Isn’t Ruling Out a Denzel Washington Crossover

Queen Latifah may be our new Equalizer but that doesn’t mean she’s our only Equalizer. During a panel for CBS’ The Equalizer during the Television Critics Association’s winter 2021 tour, the creators of the upcoming drama revealed that even though they’re not planning a crossover, they’re open to one.

CBS’ new series and the movie franchise are both based on the same source material: the 1985 Equalizer series. No matter what version you’re watching, the basic idea is the same. A former military officer gets fed up with the injustice of the world and decides to take crime fighting into their own hands. For the movie franchise, that led to Denzel Washington’s former U.S. Marine turned DIA officer Robert “Bob” McCall. And now we have Queen Latifah’s mysterious Robyn McCall, a veteran of Afghanistan who’s hiding a slew of secrets.

“It’s not anything that we’ve really talked about,” creator and executive producer Andrew Marlowe said. “We are here creating our own universe. Is there a potential that there could be a crossover universe in the future? We certainly haven’t ruled that out. But for us it really is about building this show and identity around Robyn McCall and being very specific to a show where Queen is really embodying the heart of it.”

Marlowe noted that the idea of an outsider who protects the little guy has been around for ages. “It’s never been more culturally relevant. But to have a black woman be the face of justice we think is really interesting special sauce for the series,” Marlowe added.

“I also think the movie franchise is a lot darker. It is grim. It is bloody in that very visceral way. And it was important for all of us approaching this that this show have warmth to it,” creator and executive producer Terri Miller said. “(Robyn) represents all women. Striking a balance between career and family and themselves and the world. That’s why we love being at CBS because it’s very much a network show. It was a good fit from the very beginning… I think they can both live in the same universe very comfortably in their own lanes.”

The Equalizer premieres on CBS on Sunday, February 7 directly after the Super Bowl.
