Video shows socially distanced Muslims praying in Ikea lot

Powerful footage shows hundreds of Muslims joined together in the parking lot of an Ikea store in Germany for socially distant prayers, according to a report.

The Wetzlar store loaned its parking lot Sunday to local mosques, allowing 800 worshippers to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan together, the BBC reported.

Kadir Terzi, a chairman of one of the mosques who participated, said he approached the store last week looking for a space to accommodate them under social-distancing regulations.

“The store manager didn’t hesitate for a second and said ‘yes, you can pray.’ I was surprised and happy at the same time,” Terzi told the outlet.

Terzi said praying together was especially important since the Muslim community had spent much of the holiday separate due to lockdowns.

“It was a completely different Ramadan month, without contacts, without visits and without breaking the fast together,” he said.

Aerial photos took off on social media showing the worshippers on separate mats spread out over the parking lot.

“What a lovely gesture. A true sign of hope in these difficult times,” wrote one Twitter user.
