Microsoft discontinues Cortana app for Windows 11

In June this year, Microsoft announced that it will discontinue its famous Cortana app on Windows later this year. The company has now announced that it has stopped supporting the Cortana app in Windows 11. The app is now showing a prompt to the users that it will stop working by the end of this month.

« We are making some changes to Windows that will impact users of the Cortana app. Starting in late 2023, we will no longer support Cortana in Windows as a standalone app … This change only impacts Cortana in Windows, and your productivity assistant, Cortana, will continue to be available in Outlook mobile, Teams mobile, Microsoft Teams display, and Microsoft Teams rooms, » said the company.

« We know that this change may affect some of the ways you work in Windows, so we want to help you transition smoothly to the new options. Instead of clicking the Cortana icon and launching the app to begin using voice, now you can use voice and satisfy your productivity needs through different tools, » added Microsoft.

Microsoft introduced Cortana in 2015 with Windows 10. Cortana allowed users to employ voice commands for tasks such as setting reminders, launching applications, and seeking information.

Nevertheless, Microsoft has gradually phased out Cortana from the Windows ecosystem over the years. Upon the debut of Windows 11, the digital assistant was removed from its position on the taskbar and excluded from the initial setup process. In 2020, Microsoft discontinued the Cortana app for iOS and Android devices, while also terminating Cortana support for other hardware like Surface headphones.

Despite its absence from the Windows platform, Cortana will maintain its presence in applications such as Outlook mobile, Microsoft Teams mobile, Teams display, and Teams rooms.
