The 2023 Writers Guild Awards is underway with simultaneous ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles.

Abbott Elementary actress and comedian Janelle James is hosting the L.A. ceremony, while comedian and actress Michelle Buteau (The Circle, Welcome to Buteaupia) is hosting the New York ceremony.

The Writers Guild is one of the last Hollywood guilds to announce its winners before the 2023 Oscars.

The original and adapted screenplay categories each feature three of this year’s Oscar nominees.

Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fabelmans and Tár are up for best original screenplay at the WGA Awards and at the Oscars.

And Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Top Gun: Maverick and Women Talking are up for best adapted screenplay at the WGA Awards and at the Oscars.

There’s no overlap between the documentary screenplay nominees and the Oscar documentary nominees.

TV shows nominated for multiple awards include three-time nominees The Bear, Severance and Better Call Saul and double nominees Hacks, Abbott Elementary, Andor and Bad Sisters.

The Writers Guild, as usual, is also presenting honorary awards across both ceremonies. In New York, Spike Lee will be recognized with the Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement by John Turturro; Paul Simms (What We Do in the Shadows, Atlanta, The Larry Sanders Show, NewsRadio) will be presented with the Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence by Donald Glover; and Penelope Koechl will be honored with the Richard B. Jablow Award for Dedicated Service to the Guild by previous honoree and WGAE vice president for film/TV/streaming Lisa Takeuchi Cullen. In Los Angeles, She Said writer Rebecca Lenkiewick will receive the Paul Selvin Award; Charlie Kaufman will be honored with the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement; and creator-showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser (Living Single) will be presented with the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement.

The 2023 Writers Guild Awards comes amid speculation about a potential strike as the guild’s minimum basic agreement is currently set to expire on May 1. The guild, which is set to begin negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on March 20, last week shared with members its pattern of demands or broad priorities it hopes to tackle in such talks, with a deadline of Tuesday to submit responses. The issues being considered include standardized fees for movies premiering in theaters and on streaming services and greater regulation of writing performed by artificial intelligence. The guild is also looking to enlarge writer minimums across film, TV and new media; expand protection for writers who work for long periods of time on short-order series; “address the abuses of mini-rooms“; and “ensure appropriate television series writing compensation throughout entire process of pre production, production and post production.” The guild also wants to shore up its pension plan and health fund.

Asked about the upcoming negotiations on the red carpet before the ceremony, WGA East president Michael Winship said he feels “confident.” “I feel like we have a really amazing negotiating committee this year, and a really good group — very skilled, very talented, very experienced,” Winship said. “They are ready to go in and face our people across the table and deal with all the new things that we have to deal with — streaming and other issues — and I’m very confident that we’ll have a successful negotiation.” Of a possible strike, he said: “I can’t make any kind of prediction at this point. You hope for the best, prepare for the worst.”
