Stan Wawrinka confirms where he plans to make his Grand Slam return

Swiss tennis star Stan Wawrinka has confirmed that he will play at the French Open this year, per Le Parisien. Wawrinka, 36, hasn’t played since last year’s March due to an injury. Wawrinka missed the last four Grand Slams as he didn’t play at the French Open, Wimbledon, US Open and this year’s Australian Open.

However, Wawrinka is nearing a comeback and he should make his Grand Slam return at Roland Garros. Wawrinka, now ranked at No. 173 in the world, has had success on the clay courts of Roland Garros throughout his career. Wawrinka won his first French Open title in 2015, before finishing runner-up at the tournament in 2017.

Wawrinka beat Novak Djokovic

In the 2015 French Open final, Wawrinka beat world No. 1 Djokovic to win it all. Recently, Wawrinka said Djokovic fears him, especially at the Grand Slams. « Novak Djokovic was always one of the Big-3 but I liked playing him the most.

His play suits me the most, even though he has beaten me more times than I can count, » Wawrinka said in his interview with Eurosport. « I know he fears me, mostly in Grand Slams and I feel that stepping on to the court.

He plays at his highest level against me because he knows what I’m capable of. » Wawrinka also beat Djokovic en route to winning his first Grand Slam at the 2014 Australian Open. « [Against Novak Djokovic at the 2014 Australian Open] I started doubting myself, and lost the first set 2-6.

I managed to get into the match anyway and made it into the fifth set, » Wawrinka recalled. « I told myself, ‘this time I will make it and I won’t let him get away. It is my time’ That is what happened and it took me to another level in my career. »

Wawrinka last played at the French Open in 2020. Back then, Wawrinka suffered a surprise third round loss to Hugo Gaston.
