Jannik Sinner pulls out of Marseille a week after testing positive for virus

Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from Marseille. Sinner, 20, won’t be making his third Marseille appearance this year.

Sinner, ranked at No.

10 in the world, debuted at the Marseille event in 2020. Back then, Sinner beat Norbert Gombos in his opener before losing to Daniil Medvedev in the round-of-16. Sinner returned to Marseille last year and made the quarterfinal before again losing to Medvedev.

Sinner not ready to return to action

Sinner last played at the Australian Open, where he made the quarterfinal. Sinner stood no chance in the quarterfinal as Stefanos Tsitsipas handed the Italian a 6-3 6-4 6-2 loss. “I think he played better than me today,” Sinner said after the match.

“He served better. He moved the ball better than me. He was moving better than me. It’s tough to play against him when he plays like that. “I couldn’t generate the power that I would have wanted. I was trying to move him, but I was maybe a little bit too far back because he played incredible today. »

Despite the loss, Sinner was in positive spirits. “Of course, it’s a positive tournament,” Sinner added. “I think that what I have to improve is the tennis in general. I have to serve better, I have to do everything more, especially when you play against the top guys.

“My goal is to play many matches like this, important matches against the best guys in the world, and then we see and then I grow. I think it was good. I played matches, and I had [a good] experience. Let’s see next year what I do here. »

A week ago, Sinner tested positive for COVID-19. Sinner has probably recovered from COVID-19 but he is not ready yet to return to action. It remains to be seen when will Sinner be ready to play again.
