Qualifier Jiri Lehecka reacts to stunning Denis Shapovalov in Rotterdam

World No. 137 Jiri Lehecka admitted he was excited and happy after stunning Denis Shapovalov in Rotterdam. Lehecka, 20, claime the biggest win of his career on Tuesday after stunning Shapovalov 6-4 6-4 in the Rotterdam first round.

Lehecka won two qualifying matches over the weekend to earn a main draw spot in Rotterdam. Lehecka continued his fine form on Tuesday when he took on world No. 12 Shapovalov. “Of course I’m excited. It was a good match today from my side.

Very happy with my performance,” Lehecka told the ATP Tour website. “I knew that it would be a tough match of course, he’s No. 12 in the world. It is not easy against these type of players”.

Lehecka delivered a good performance against Shapovalov

Lehecka got off to a good start against Shapovalov, having claimed the first break of the match in the third game to take a 2-1 lead.

Shapovalov had a chance to get the break back in the sixth game but Lehecka saved four break points to go 4-2 up. Lehecka served out for the first set in the 10th game. After winning the first set, Lehecka started the second set with a break but got broken back immediately in the following game.

However, Lehecka kept his focus as he broke Shapovalov again in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead in the second set. Lehecka saved four break points in the sixth game and served out for the match in the 10th game. Growing up, Czech Lehecka used to follow Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek.

“When I was a young kid, they were winning the Davis Cup and playing incredible matches,” Lehecka recalled. “Every time they played, I was watching the TV and trying to imagine what it would look like if I would be in their position one day and, of course, they gave me a lot of inspiration when I saw all the Czech fans cheering for them”.
