Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem has further delayed his comeback as he has announced his withdrawal from Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Santiago. Thiem, a former world No. 3, suffered a wrist injury at the Mallorca Open in June.
Thiem, now ranked at No. 37 in the world, was hoping to be ready to start his season in Australia. After withdrawing from the Australian Open, Thiem targeted to make a comeback at this week’s ATP event in Cordoba. Thiem pulled out of Cordoba but was hoping to make a comeback next week in Buenos Aires.
Unfortunately, Thiem suffered a minor setback — not related to his wrist — and he will be out for a few more weeks. « Training was going well in Vienna and I am so happy that I’ve made a full recovery regarding my wrist.
Unfortunately, I have suffered this minor setback in Santiago, which has forced me to temporarily stop training, » Thiem said in a press statement. « It’s never easy to come back after being away from competition for seven months.
I will follow my doctor’s advice and after resting a couple of days, I will start training again next week. I need some consistent time on-court before making my comeback. »

The Indian Wells Masters starts on the 10th of March and Thiem will have just over a month to prepare for the first Masters event of the season.
It has been a rough year and a half for Thiem. After winning his maiden Grand Slam title at the 2020 US Open, Thiem struggled with his results and injuries. Nobody expected Thiem to be out for this long after he initially sustained a wrist injury. Hopefully, Thiem will be able to make his long-awaited comeback in Indian Wells.
