Andy Murray splits with his coach after a trial period

Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray has split with coach Jan de Witt, per The Telegraph. Murray split with his long-term coach Jamie Delgado after the 2021 season. Murray added de Witt to his coaching staff on a trial period.

The trial period between Murray and de Witt is finished and the Briton has decided to not continue their partnership. Murray’s Australian summer campaign wasn’t catastrophic but it wasn’t great either. Murray kicked off his season at the Melbourne Summer Set, where he suffered a shock defeat to Facundo Bagnis in his opener.

Murray then took a wildcard into Sydney, where he made his first ATP final since 2019. Unfortunately for Murray, he stood no chance against Aslan Karatsev in the Sydney final as the Russian claimed a staight-set win to win Sydney.

Murray made a positive start to his Australian Open campaign as he beat Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round but then suffered a shock straight-set loss to Taro Daniel in his next match.

Murray was frustrated after the loss

« When you know you’ve not got many years left it is frustrating, » Murray told BBC Sport after losing to Nishioka.

« After a good win in the first round I created an opportunity for myself. It was probably a match I should win and I didn’t take that chance. « I was not able to sustain a good enough level for long enough, whereas he was solid throughout.

« I’m obviously very disappointed with that. » Murray hinted he could retire if not happy with his results in 2022. « This is a really important year for me for a number of reasons, and I want to perform well in the big events.

For me, tonight is not good enough in that respect, » Murray said. « Making second round of slams is not something I find particularly motivating. I want to be doing better than that. « Yeah, depends on how I get on this year results-wise and how I perform in the big events. »
