Leg surgery ‘went excellent’ after UFC 264 loss

At least one thing went well for Conor McGregor this weekend: surgery.

The UFC 264 pay-per-view headliner, who lost for the second consecutive time to Dustin Poirier on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, tweeted late Sunday that the operation to repair the fractured left ankle that forced a doctor’s stoppage after the first round “went excellent.”

“Just out of the surgery room guys!” McGregor tweeted. “Surgery went excellent! Feeling tremendous! 6 weeks on crutch and we build back! Let’s go! God bless.” He closed with the folded hands emoji.

Doctors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles operated on the former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion’s fractured tibia and fibula for three hours, according to a statement released via social media by his manager Audie Attar of Paradigm Sports. The statement said his doctors “are confident that with time he will make a full recovery.”

McGregor suffered the injury late in the loss to Poirier, which came six months after he lost via second-round TKO. In the waning moments of the opening round, an awkward step backward on the injured leg caused his foot to roll awkwardly and then he fell onto his rear. The compromised Irishman absorbed a flurry of punches from Poirier but was saved by the horn.

At that point, McGregor indicated that his ankle was injured and the fight was waved off.

Poirier (28-6, 21 finishes) left the octagon as the winner of what has become a tense trilogy, while McGregor (22-6, 20 finishes) falls to 3-4 in MMA since winning the featherweight title in December 2015. He also lost his lone boxing match to unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2017.
