Trevor Story isn’t living in a bubble. He’s aware of the rumors that he could be moved. He saw his close friend and teammate Nolan Arenado get dealt. He’s entering the final year of his contract and the Rockies are projected to finish last in the NL West.

“I think it’s obvious, a lot of things have happened,” the standout shortstop told the Denver Post. “But I think it’s as simple as this is my last year on contract with the Rockies. And really, my main focus is to figure out how many games we can win. I’m going to give everything I have to my teammates, and really, just keep it as simple as that.

“And then whatever transpires, transpires. I’m really not too worried about any of that or trying to forecast any of that. That’s kind of where I’m at.”

When asked if Story will still be a Rockie at the outset of the season, general manager Jeff Bridich merely said: “I think so.”

He added: “We certainly cherish having Trevor as our shortstop, and it’s very difficult to answer your question directly, very difficult to predict what the coming months, what they’re going to look like.”

The Denver Post reported a trade doesn’t seem imminent. But Colorado could look to trade Story if it falls out of the race as expected. But the 28-year-old two-time All-Star isn’t thinking about that. He’s focused on preparing for the season.

“To be honest, moving up through the system, it’s really a contract year every year,” he said. “You have to prove yourself, especially once you hit arbitration. I really do feel that that is going to serve me well.

“It’s never been about money or anything like that, to me, in this game. I really just feel that I want to win. That’s always been my main goal and my focus. All of my energy and time goes into how I can make myself a better player and how I can try to lead these guys the best way I can.”

Story had 11 home runs, 28 RBIs and 15 stolen bases during the shortened 2020 season. He hit at least 35 home runs in each of his previous two seasons.
