It doesn’t hurt to make the call, especially when this offseason has the potential for quarterback volatility.
CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported on Sunday that multiple teams have expressed interest in the Seahawks’ willingness to deal their eight-time Pro Bowl quarterback.
The report comes on the heels of a disappointing finish to the 2020 NFL season in the wild-card round. Wilson also publicly stated he was not happy with the Seahawks’ decision to fire offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.
Wilson posted arguably his best season to date, however, and shows no indication of slowing down at 32 years old.
The 2012 third-rounder has been with the Seahawks his entire career and has never missed a game. He has helped the team advance to the postseason in eight of nine seasons and won the Super Bowl in 2014. He has a 65.1 completion percentage during the regular season and has thrown for 33,946 yards, 267 touchdowns and 81 interceptions. He also has 803 rushing attempts for 4,506 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Wilson would come at a steep price price to the tune of multiple first-round picks. He signed a four-year, $140 million contract extension in 2019 and carries a $32 million cap hit and $39 million dead cap hit in 2021 according to Spotrac.
Numerous quarterback vacancies are expected to open up heading into this offseason, and multiple teams would be interested in making a pitch for the Seattle signal-caller, should Seahawks general manager John Schneider be willing to play ball. The article makes an argument for eight different teams as potential landing spots, and added that the physical locations and a team’s competitiveness would play a role in Wilson’s willingness to move.
The Wisconsin product is married to 35-year-old singer Ciara, who would likely want to stay in or near a major market for her own career. The couple have two children, Sienna Princess and Win Harrison.
La Canfora noted that the Saints — whose future at quarterback is hazy with Drew Brees’ impending retirement — would be a “prime destination” and “most certainly would like to further explore his potential availability after some exploratory calls.” He added that there is “certainly” interest from the Raiders and that the Dolphins’ interest had “already been piqued,” as Wilson would be a significant upgrade from both Derek Carr and Tua Tagovailoa.
