Stefon Diggs stared as Chiefs celebrated Super Bowl 2021 berth

Stefon Diggs may have some fresh images to fuel his offseason work and next season.

Well after the final whistle of the AFC Championship game on Sunday night, Diggs stood alone near the Bills sideline to watch the Chiefs get their trophy and celebrate a 38-24 win on their way to Super Bowl 2021.

Diggs had a standout year in his first season with the Bills after a trade from the Vikings, but the wide receiver and his teammates still have some work to do to catch the defending Super Bowl champs in the AFC hierarchy.

“The Buffalo Bills will be back,” coach Sean McDermott said in a postgame interview with CBS. “We obviously didn’t play our best game, but we’re going to learn from this experience.”

Diggs finally left the field after McDermott came back out to get him, according to a video posted to Twitter.

“Like the rest of the guys, he’s very frustrated,” McDermott told reporters. “He’s a heck of a competitor as are the guys in our locker room. It stinks to get this far. Sometimes the further you go the harder it is to lose. It’s a learning experience for us as an organization, and we got to get back to work here.”

Diggs is no stranger to playoff heartbreak, having been on both sides of the coin. While with the Vikings in 2018, he lost an NFC Championship game to the Eagles. That came a week after he caught a game-winning, 61-yard touchdown pass with no time left on the clock to beat the Saints in what became known as the “Minneapolis Miracle.”

On Sunday, the Bills jumped out to a 9-0 lead before the Chiefs came back to run away with the game. Diggs caught six passes for 77 yards and was kept out of the end zone. It was one of the quieter games of his All-Pro season in which he and quarterback Josh Allen formed a dangerous duo, with Diggs leading the league with 127 catches for 1,535 yards and eight touchdowns during the regular season.
