Another quarterback from the 2016 draft class reportedly has relationship issues with his head coach.

Fresh off of bowing out of the playoffs with an NFC divisional round loss to the Packers, Rams quarterback Jared Goff and head coach Sean McVay may have some work to do to repair their relationship.

“The people I’ve spoken to said basically at this moment the relationship with Goff and McVay: not great. They need marriage counseling is what one person said to me,” NFL Network’s Steve Wyche said on Monday. “I think this is something that they’re going to be able to work through, but there’s got to be some healing and that’s not just with Jared Goff’s injured thumb.”

McVay started backup quarterback John Wolford in the wild-card round game against the Seahawks, only to lose him to a neck injury in the first quarter. Goff, who was still coming back from thumb surgery, was thrown into the game and did enough to guide the Rams to the 30-20 upset.

Goff admitted after the game he was disappointed not to have started, but then got the nod Saturday in the Rams’ 32-18 loss to the Packers.

McVay further clouded the Rams’ quarterback situation after the loss, when he was asked if Goff was still the team’s quarterback.

“Yeah, he’s the quarterback right now,” McVay said.

For the season, Goff completed 67 percent of his passes for 3,952 yards, 20 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He is under contract with the Rams through 2024, with a potential opt-out in 2023, after signing a four-year, $134 million extension prior to the 2019 season.

“We know John Wolford came in and they were excited about him when Jared Goff got hurt and the way he performed, and then he got hurt,” Wyche said. “So I think a lot of people are wondering if they’re going to bring in a veteran type of quarterback to push Jared Goff this offseason. Or at least have that threat there as a backup to see if they can elevate Goff.”

The questions about the Goff-McVay relationship don’t sound quite as dire as the ones regarding Carson Wentz and Doug Pederson. Wentz, who was drafted second overall behind Goff in the 2016 NFL draft, reportedly had a “fractured” relationship with Pederson, which ultimately resulted in Pederson getting fired last week.
