Apple is doubling down on sci-fi with new series Foundation, based on Isaac Asimov’s award-winning novel. The tech giant surprised viewers with a first-look at the series during its WWDC20 presentation on Monday, and the teaser makes the sprawling scope of the new Apple Original clear. Star Wars, who?
Like its namesake, Apple’s Foundation follows a band of exiles as they set out on an epic journey to save humanity and rebuild civilization following the fall of the Galactic Empire. The sci-fi drama stars Chernobyl‘s Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Lou Llobell, Laura Birn, Terrence Mann, and Cassian Bilton as the group of intergalactic travelers, known as The Foundation.
The Foundation teaser gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the forthcoming drama and even offers some important context for viewers new to the franchise. “People have been trying to make Foundation for more than 50 years,” says executive producer David S. Goyer. “Foundation was an enormous influence for Star Wars. It was the greatest science fiction work of all time.”
Goyer goes on to explain that Asimov’s story “unfolds over the course of 1,000 years,” and the Apple Original will attempt to do the epic justice. “If ever there were a company that was hoping to sort of better people’s lives through technology, through connectivity, it’s Apple,” he says. “That’s something very much that Asimov was hoping to do.”
Apple’s Foundation teaser also offers a brief look at the series’ high-stakes drama. With Harris’ Hari Seldon at the helm, the Foundation prepares for the collapse of the Galactic Empire and sets out to prevent the spread of darkness everywhere. Hari Seldon puts it best: “The Empire will fall. Order will vanish. These massive events rushing to meet us.”
If that doesn’t sound like fodder for a streaming mega hit, I don’t know what does.
Foundation will premiere in 2021. Watch the official Apple TV+ teaser above.
