Eric Garner widow sobs testifying in mock trial for Reelz

Eric Garner’s widow broke down sobbing after testifying as part of a mock murder trial of the police officer involved in the death of her husband, part of a TV movie to be aired Saturday night.

Garner, 43, of Staten Island, died after being confronted by undercover police in July 2014. The cops accused him of selling loose, untaxed cigarettes and put him in a chokehold that had been banned by the NYPD. Officer Daniel Pantaleo, who is white, put Garner in the chokehold while Garner repeatedly said “I can’t breathe” until he lost consciousness and died an hour later.

No one was put on trial for the death of Garner so REELZ network put together “American Trial: the Eric Garner Story” to give an idea of what might have gone down had the murder been dissected in a courtroom. A state grand jury declined to indict Pantaleo on criminal charges. Pantaleo was not even fired until last year.

The production brought in Garner’s widow, Esaw Garner Snipes, to testify, as well as other people who would have been likely witnesses had there been a trial.

Snipes cried after recounting her husband’s death after being put in a police chokehold. She said what made it even worse was that their daughter died right before the mock trial, TMZ reported.

Erica Garner died on Dec. 30, 2017, after suffering a heart attack at the age of 27.

The docudrama also includes attorney and legal scholar Alan Dershowitz as well as renowned forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden, who was retained by the Garner family to perform an independent autopsy.
