When Deonna Purrazzo appeared on Impact last night (May 26), a lot of fans wondered why the former ROH & NXT wrestler joined what many believe is already the second best line-up of female talent in North America instead of heading to the higher profile AEW.

One fan took the question – along with a general critique of the company’s entire scene – directly to the Executive Vice-President in charge of All Elite’s women’s division, Kenny Omega. And Omega responded.

Well, Kenny did provide an opening for a follow-up. And the guy took advantage of the opening to double down on his criticism. At which point Omega agreed to disagree and moved along.

JohnnyZ who pretty much only watches women’s wrestling had a retort, but you get the gist.

While I’ll admit to being someone who figured The Virtuosa would be headed to Dynamite and Dark, I also don’t have many issues with Omega & company’s booking of late. Double or Nothing got them a champion in Hikaru Shida who is over, available, and experienced enough to work with their entire roster. The main issue with their women’s division isn’t so much roster depth, but showcasing the talent they have.

Could they use a Purrazzo, or Kimber Lee, or any of the other women who’ve flocked to Impact*? Sure. But AEW is opting to work on making the wrestlers they have stars rather than filling the division with people we may only see on television once or twice a month. It may be the right strategy. It may not. We’ll see. But it’s not an irrational one.

But that’s just my (and it seems Kenny’s) opinion. What’s yours?

* Impact’s women’s division is really impressive, and you have to think that the other talent & the chance to work with an all-time great in producer Gail Kim is as much of a draw for free agents as Anthem’s money at this point.
